Be a Volunteer to Change the World
In our competitive and fast-paced society, it is unusual to “give up” our time and energy for seemingly nothing in return. So why volunteer? Studies worldwide have shown that engaging in social activities such as volunteering within the community can greatly improve mental and physical health, greater life satisfaction, lower rates of depression and lower mortality rates. For most, volunteering stems from the desire to help others or to “do good” for the community; it's not about getting anything in return but in the end it repays you a lot. Volunteering often puts you in different situations with people you would not ordinarily associate with. By working with, and for the benefit of, those who need a helping hand -- youth, the elderly, disabled, impoverished or victims of a natural disaster -- you see and experience life outside of your norm.
By getting to know those you volunteer with and listening to their stories and life experiences, you will inevitably broaden your perspective, build relationships, deepen your compassion and provide new meaning to your life. But there is more to volunteering than personal change; knowledge, skills and experience gained from volunteer activities can be transferred to your professional life. By working with a team of volunteers, learning a new skill set and challenging yourself by taking on different volunteer tasks, you become more competitive in the job market and/or more qualified for your current job. So, take the time to help others, help your community and help yourself by becoming a volunteer.
